Nervous System Work and Dysregulation:

Have you ever noticed yourself feeling extra tired, fatigued, tense, anxious, and easily irritated or annoyed? How about your child or teenager? Are you finding yourself having to constantly walk on eggshells, not knowing which mood or behavior you’re going to get that day?

All of these way-too-common daily challenges experienced by millions of families today are signs and symptoms of nervous system dysregulation, and it’s a serious condition that is very easily overlooked by most medical professionals.

A dysregulated nervous system can also show up as chronic gut/GI issues,  a weakened immune response, obsessive type behaviour (such as TICS) and/or excessive inflammation  within the body.

Every client I see in my clinic is in some form of Fight or Flight….

or in more severe cases, a state of “freeze”. Freeze can take the shape of school refusal, severe social anxiety, tonic immobility (which is tension in the body and muscles) or simply completely disconnected from themselves and others.

We cannot begin to work on other issues affecting people (such as physical pain, emotional dysregulation, undesired repeated behavioural patterns, neurological disorders etc) if the body is in a state of fight/flight.  If our system is in fight/flight it means we are in a “Sympathetic Nervous System” state (SNS). We don’t want to be in this state, trust me! Google it!  It makes our heart beat faster, slows our digestion down, can make us gain weight. It can weaken our immunity, give us chest pains, create chronic pain or headaches or create constipation/diarrhea.  And that’s only mentioning a few symptoms.  Rather, we want to be in a state of “Parasympathetic Nervous System” state (PSNS).
So…..because 99% of clients who walk through my door are in a state of SNS, my priority is to move them out of this state by doing some SNS procedures.  These SNS procedures are gentle and incredibly nourishing to our whole system. This work could includes lymphatic drainage, vegus nerve stimulation work, breathing exercises and physical movement as examples.

If you’ve tried multiple avenues, therapies, diet changes, supplements, or even medications to get you, or your child’s energy, mood, and focus back online, but still struggle, then it’s time to learn more about nervous system dysregulation, how to find out if you have it, and what to do about it if you do!

Functional Neurology

Functional neurology is a specialized field of healthcare that focuses on the assessment and rehabilitation of the human nervous system. It utilizes sensory, motor, cognitive, and metabolic-based therapies to enhance neuroplasticity, neurological integrity, and functional brain optimization. It differs from traditional neurology in that that looks at the brains structure and/or disease of the brain, whereas functional neurology looks at our brain functions.

Functional neurology has developed from basic neuroscience principles and an understanding of how the most recent scientific research can be applied to patient care. Through careful assessment, functional neurology can not only determine which areas of a person’s nervous system are weak, but also determine the appropriate treatment/correction to improve the quality of how their nervous system functions. The man often credited with the origin of this premise is Dr. Ted Carrick, who has been researching and teaching this model since the mid-1970s.

A basic premise of Functional Neurology is to support healthy plasticity of the nervous system through proper stimulation and fuel. Treatment is aimed at not only protecting the nervous system, but giving it the activation that it needs to thrive. We now know that even a nervous system that is functioning poorly can be rehabilitated, often with progressive and permanent success.

All my clients will undergo an initial functional neurological health assessment in their first session. Thise include checking the primitive reflexes, cranial nerves, vegus nerve assessment, lymphatic health, breathing skills plus others.
